Highlights of 2010!

I am currently in Sydney after going to the Mudgee region. They have forty vineyards and a boutique brewery there now! http://mudgeebrewing.com.au/ Mmmmm Beer. I'm not one of those up themselves Sydney people who goes to Mudgee and goes 'can I have a Dry White'- I laugh at these people and proceed to try to pick their daughter(s). I talk to the people who work there and they are often very welcoming, give great advice and get me tipsy. Mudgee has been operating as a wine region since the 1850's. We then went to the Blue Mountains, where, coincidentally, everyone from Europe was. But it was great- just a little crowded. Now I'm in Sydney awaiting tonight's New Years Eve festivities. Watch out Ladies.

 Movies I liked this year

Movies- A Night in Paris 2,  A Prophet, Inception, The Other Guys, The Easy A. Those movies should get you thinking, laid or both.

Other good movies according to various sources- Winter's Bone, The King's speech, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Robin Hood, Micmacs, City Island, Tomorrow When the War Began, The Social Network.

2010

One thing I loathe about Australian media is its tenacious appetite for negative events. In these times aphorism's like 'Happiness writes in white ink on a white page'' by Henry de Montherlant, become more pertinent. I believe people pass along bad news at a rate of 7-2, compared to good news. Now for the Good News.

What we know from 2010

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the number of undernourished people in the world declined by 100 million this year, from 1,023,000,000 in 2009 to 925 million at the moment. From 1970, the amount of people who are categorised as being undernnourished has been lifted from one in four to one in seven. This is a massive achievement.

People should read The UN's 2010 Human Development Report. As reported in the SMH. In developing countries:

Life expectancy- 1970- 59, 2010 - 70
School enrolment- 1970 55 percent, 2010 - 70
GDP per capita- $US 5,000 to more than $10,000
Since 1970 only three countries, Republic of Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe have gone backwards.

In Australia

Crime

"The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research published research showing downward trends in violent crime, property crime, The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre found that the use of heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis and cocaine are all lower than they were in 2000 and all, aside from heroin, have been declining since 2005."

Medical

Stem cells were used for the first time in the brain of a stroke victim, offering hope to many. Stem cells were also used to grow the first ever set of lungs. An electric eye was also built this year. Basically, you have a camera in your set of glasses and this transmits images to a chip in your brain which stimulates optic nerves connected to your retina. Needless to say the people working on these things are fucking smart.

University of Maryland Scientists "succeeded in teleporting data from one atom to another, a kind of holy grail in the field and the basis for faster, more compact computers". "The scientist who helped map the human genome in 2001, Craig Venter, completed a 15-year quest to synthesise a bacterial cell that replicates on its own, holding out hopes for fast production of vaccines and biofuels."

Our life expectancy has gone up a minimum of 22 years in the last century and cancer mortality has dropped slightly.

The lethal virus rinderpest has all but been eliminated. Some saying this is the biggest achievement in veterinary science, ever. Nothing as big has been eradicated since smallpox.   http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/resources/documents/multimedia/popup/grep.html

Space/Land

The NASA Kepler telescope helped scientists find 750 new planets this year- similar to Earth. The Amazon rainforest's deforestation has decreased by more than 90 percent since 2004.

Our currency is higher than the US and Canada is on the rise everywhere. Australia had the the second fastest growing currency in 2010. Our Unemployment rate is in the low 5 percentage range. The Canadian Unemployment rate is 7.6 percent, US 9.3 percent.

Top Songs of 2010

This could be a never ending list. Everyone has their different tastes and preferences. I admire different genres and have tried to accommodate varying artists. I have tried to restrict the more commercial/mainstream songs. Thanks to Bernard Zuel, Dom Alessio, Clem Bastow, Barry Divola and Samantha Clode. The ones with an asterisk are Australian. Ad your thoughts and comments. If you mention Ke$ha or Kanye you will get an instant STD/STI.

I have put links in insteading of embedding the code. This way your computer/phone won't blow up.

Chevy's National Lampoons Christmas Lights vs Modern Christmas Lights

We have all seen 'National Lampoons Christmas Vacation'. We all saw Chevy initially fail to rig up the Christmas lights right....and the cat get electrocuted in a seperate but fatal incident (for the cat). See it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ian6NyXpszw
I think the show he is now in, 'community' - is smashing baby.

Here are some impressive Christmas light videos. Ranging from the theme's of guitar hero, gameboy, to old school classics mixed with rave tunes.

Guitar Hero- You can actually play the game on your garage door.

Gameboy- Prob drive the Neighbours Nuts.

Rave Time

As the Name Suggests-

Might do one more post before Christmas. Thanks to everyone pushing my total views above 1200 (it doesn't include my own views- incase you were wondering). I don't know many people who have gone from writing about Assange to writing about Christmas lights :).
Cheers Barnes.

When Sweden + Sex = Prison

When Sweden + Sex = Prison

When I imagine Sweden, I think of bountiful big bosomed blond beauties in IKEA warehouses. I don’t imagine being locked up in a prison because my condom broke or because a girl didn’t think I was as chivalrous as I should have been. Julian Assange (Australian Wikileaks guy) finds himself in a sticky, legal quagmire…and I’m just going to talk about the sex claims. Some people may know that i have worked in tax law. The Swedish sex laws are even more complex than Australian tax law. James D. Caitlin, a Melbourne barrister, recently wrote, “you need a law degree to know whether you have been raped or not in Sweden.” Luckily, I have a law degree. However, the chances of me going to the police because I was raped by bountiful big bosomed blond beauties are remote to non existent. Back to Assange.

The two women went to four different prosecutors until they finally got a prosecutor to press charges. There are four charges, including, “ofredande”, which means annoyance. The girls are basically saying that Assange used his body weight (he’s a very skinny guy) to lie on one of them (missionary position?). He is also being charged with “assaulting one of the individual’s sexual integrity” by having consensual sex, but without a condom. The third charge is using his penis to prod into one of the individual’s backs, in the morning, after they spent the night together. This is what many people would call ‘morning glory’ (Charles Waterstreet). The fourth charge is, having sex with a sleeping woman (he was bad and she fell asleep?). I am in no-way condoning sexual assault, or the like. I am, suggesting that, Swedish sex laws are quite liberal. A judge in Australia would probably laugh at you as it seems evident that there was consent.

Now I appreciate that Sweden may be a fairly feminist country. But there is feminism and then there is feminism. Naomi Wolf for the Huffington Post wrote a parody piece on the subject and according to the prosecution- me, my father and every male could be in danger.

“I know you (interpol) will now prioritize the global manhunt for 1.3 million guys I have heard similar complaints about personally in the US alone -- there is an entire fraternity at the University of Texas you need to arrest immediately. I also have firsthand information that John Smith in Providence, Rhode Island, went to a stag party -- with strippers! -- that his girlfriend wanted him to skip, and that Mark Levinson in Corvallis, Oregon, did not notice that his girlfriend got a really cute new haircut -- even though it was THREE INCHES SHORTER”

The women boasted after sleeping with Assange on the internet, via mobiles and in the national Swedish paper. Incidentally, one of them has written a book on how to get revenge on cheating boyfriends. As Charles Waterstreet writes:

‘when people come together in Sweden to make love, all the myriad acts that make it occur require a series of legal permissions for every movement. You need a border pass at every gate, let alone entry point. You need your permission passport stamped before and after any visit to any part of the body. You may need a notary public to witness…solo sex, a form of self- assembly requires your own written consent in advance.”

Lucky for these guys they're in America.

Cheers Barnes.

What I know about Women

For those in the know, there has been a column in the Life section of the SMH entitled 'What I know about Women,' written by Men. I thought I would ad to the collection.

My Mum, Cathie, has always been a fighter. She is extremely selfless (like my Father) and doesn't have a bad bone in her body. This phrase is used a lot- but I think those that know her would agree. My mother is the kind of person, who instead of giving a homeless person money, will go into a shop and buy them a pie. Now I know there is a fine line with being generous and being walked over. But if everyone was as generous and caring as her, there would be no need to worry about the scruples of others.

She was brought up in the small, rural town of Mudgee. More famous these days for its wines and tourism. Her family didn't have much, but they did have a belief in looking out for one another. She doesn't condemn or criticize anyone, until she knows all the facts. She is one of the smartest people I know. She can devour books in a day and always has an educated opinion on contemporary topics. It is safe to say that both my Mum and Sister are more intelligent than I will ever be. But I will be better at Rugby than they will ever be :)....hopefully.

I would say that about half my friends are girls or maybe more. Females are better at weighing up different issues and giving genuine answers. They are better at gathering information and suggesting different alternatives of action. They are more careful when making important decisions and thus less reckless and ego driven. Women are also physically beautiful and look after themselves.

I have learned a lot from Women. I used to be a bit ego driven. At Uni I would walk up to girls in Clubs/Bars and say things like 'So what have you got going for you apart form your looks' etc. But through girls, I have dropped any ego that I may have had and become more passionate and understanding. Girls give me someone to talk to about the world and my interests. They talk less about mind numbing things than males do. Not that I don't like to talk about the Rugby, Cricket or NHL at times.

If guys had to give birth, we would probably cry for about a month afterwards. So hats off to my Mum, Sister and all the girls I have been lucky enough to meet and are friends of mine.

Aussie Hip Hop

I have been travelling back and forth from home to Brisbane- if there were frequent road points I would be set. I am missing stereosonic right now which is annoying, oh well. I also changed my relationship status on facebook to see if those ads that appear would change...it appears not. I still get hit with these 'young Russian female seeking young Aussie' ads, or the like. I know Aussie hip hop is starting to find its feet overseas. I have some Canadian friends who really like it, so I thought i would do some digging to find you some new stuff. This site is also good http://allaussiehiphop.wordpress.com/
